Kym, I believe the instrument in the photo is a 1950's Geiger Counter used for locating uranium deposits. Many people bought these to prospect for the uranium deposit that would make them rich. Only a few people actually got rich from these instruments. Simular devices are still in use today for detecting all kinds of radiation.

Kym Backland replied:

Ralph, Thanks so much for your information about the Geiger Counter. I was just talking about those items the other day. I was telling her that friends of my parents had them. She said " You mean Metal Detectors, and I said no.." Geiger Counter" for Uranium... she thought I was crazy!! Then here you go and tell me that THIS ITEM is a Geiger Counter!! So very interesting, timely, and topical to my recent conversations! I cant' wait to tell her this news.. Thanks for your comments and taking the time to leave me this fine message Ralph!

Shots like this make me think of my father. I only wish that I'd been into photography while he was still alive.

Kym Backland replied:

Odd, Oooh, that made me feel rather sad, when you said that about your father. I'm sorry he isn't alive. Thanks for sharing your very personal thoughts. I always have a had a vibe you are very thoughtul and an insightful man. Thanks for your sharing your comments with me!
