Description
This is at least the forth generation of Pilated Woodpeckers (from one Mother). We live in the woods, lots of old growth Cedars and Firs. They were born in a stump close to where we live. This one was born this spring, his head is still not as red as her older siblings or her parents. It's unfortunate that so many of our old growth Cedars are dying all around us. But, it sure makes for a lot of Woodpeckers at our house! They hammer so loud sometimes, I think it is someone chopping wood! But, no...it's Woody...the Pilated Woodpecker. This bird looks so prehistoric.. Here's some facts about the Pilated Woodpecker if you are interested to know.Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America (with the exception of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, which probably no longer lives within the borders of the United States). They are crow-sized and black, with bright red pointed crests, the red more extensive on the crests of males. A broad white stripe on each side of their faces below their eyes continues down along each side of their necks. Males have red moustachial stripes, females black. White underwing linings and some white at the wrist above are visible when the bird flies.

I've seen Pileated Woodpeckers and have even managed to get a few shots but nothing as good as yours. I usually only get a glimpse and it's generally in very poor light. This is the best one I've ever seen. Congratulations on a terrific shot.

Ella, Thank you so much for all your support and compliments! I used to try to get a shot at one of these. I think you need to have a forest around you, and one that has a lot of rotten trees! Good for getting a shot of Woody, bad for the forest! See ya again soon!
